JISC Access Management Showcase Event

Session E: Resource Management Within Institutions

Presentation Overview

Speakers: John Paschoud and Sally Rumsey, London School of Economics

This session is aimed at institutional library staff and Athens administrators.

As part of the development of federated access management, tools are beginning to emerge to support the work of libraries in managing resources including license terms and conditions and restricting resource access to certain groups of users. This session gives an overview of developments and will also be an opportunity for attendees to give their view on development requirements in this area.

There was less time than we expected for more interaction at the end of the session (coinciding with lunchtime... ;->). Below are brief notes on the questions posed (at the end of the concluding part of John Paschoud's presentation:

Q1: How many of you manage several classes of user?

12 hands (ca. 25%) showed.

Q2: Interest in Licensing to smaller groups within an institution?

No hands showed.

Q3: What roles do you need to see taken into account, beyond students / staff?

- medics (some resources only permit medics)

- industrial partners (given pseudo-membership)

- FE / HE mixes (FE can get more resources – special cheaper access via Athens account groups)

Q4: To SPs: Would you target sales on more focused groups?

One respondent - main target remains institutions.

Email responses (mailto:J.Paschoud@LSE.ac.uk) would also be welcome on these, and the questions:

Q5: Do vendors trust universities etc. to restrict access to licensed users?

Q6: What are the risk areas for trust, and a UK Education trust federation?
